Rath Yatra of Puri is the annual Chariot Festival of Odisha traditionally known as the Puri Rath Yatra. The Puri Rath Yatra 2022 has begun with devotion and traditions across Odisha. The chariot festival is dedicated Lord Jagannath, his brother Balbhadra and his sister Subhadra. The journey of the deities begins at the iconic Puri Temple and reaches the Gundicha Shrine after twelve the gentleman returns to his adobe. The idols of the three deities are carried by three priests from the Holy of Holies and Garbha Griha and carried to Gundicha Shrine in three huge wooden carts.

The raths or chariots are huge and the priests and devotees draw the three raths with immense devotion. Puri Rath Yatra 2022: The Raths or Chariots

The three chariots of the deities are built each year from wood from certain trees such as Phassi and Dhausa. There is a specialized team of carpenters who bring the wood for crafting the Raths of Deities from the former princely state of Dasapalla. The logs they bring with them are traditionally launched as rafts in the Mahanadi River. The three chariots are adorned with specific and unique instructions given below in the table from the years.

Puri Rath Yatra 2022: Chandan Yatra

On Akshaya Tritiya, the construction of the chariot begins, with a ritual of fire worship. The ritual takes place in front of the palace of the king of Puri. This day also marks the new farming season for the farmers of Odisha and they start plowing their fields, it marks that too Beginning of the summer festival of the deities known as Sandalwood Festival or Chandan Yatra. Puri Rath Yatra 2022: Suna Besha

That Suna Bescha is celebrated when the chariots of the deities return to the main temple after returning from the temple Gundicha Temple. The deities are dressed in gold ornaments and are worshiped on the chariots. It is known that this ritual was traditionally started by King Kapilendra Deb 1460, when he gave gold to Jagannath after returning victorious from the war. Nearly, 208 kg of gold jewelry is adorned on the three deities.
