Samsung continues to dominate the smartphone market, overtaking Apple and Xiaomi to become number one

New Delhi. Samsung has been a leading smartphone manufacturer for years and even today the company continues to dominate global markets. The South Korean giant has topped the list in the first quarter of this year. According to International Data Corporation (IDC) report, Samsung has been the No. 1 smartphone manufacturer in the first quarter of 2022 with 73.6 million unit shipments and a 23.4% market share.

However, compared to the first quarter of 2021, there has been a 1.2 percent decline in the company’s shipments this year. Last year, Samsung made 74.5 million shipments in the same period. Apple, ahead of Samsung, took an 18 percent market share from January to March this year and secured second place with total shipments of 56.6 million iPhones. Unlike Samsung, Apple increased its shipments by 2.2 percent in the first quarter of this year.

Xiaomi shipped 3.99 million units
Xiaomi, OPPO and Vivo rank third, fourth and fifth respectively. Xiaomi captured 12.7 percent of the market with 3.99 million shipments, while OPPO shipped 27.4 million units for an 8.7 percent market share. Vivo’s market share was 8.1 percent, as the company shipped 2.53 million units.

Drop in shipments from Chinese companies
Notably, all three Chinese smartphone makers such as Samsung show a year-over-year decline in shipments, with Vivo seeing a massive 27.7 percent drop, followed by Oppo with a 26.8 percent drop and Xiaomi with a drop of 17.8 percent.

According to IDC’s Nabila Pople, companies are struggling in the market due to problems in the supply chain of the components used to make smartphones. She is also indicating a reduction in customer demand due to the current economic situation and global inflation.
